WORLD YOUTH DAY 2015 - What's going on..?
« on: April 06, 2013, 11:38:28 PM »
The subject of World Youth Day 2015 (i.e. the one after Rio) comes up a lot these days. I am constantly being asked about it. The various gadgets and gizmos that help me run the site also tell me that it's one of the main things that people who come to this site from search engines type in to get here. In all cases, the people making the queries probably end up finding out that beyond speculation nobody actually knows anything yet. That speculation though, if you're interested, looks like this...

The locations for the last umpteen (read: It's too late to actually work it out!) World Youth Days has been announced at the final Mass of the previous event, with pretty much everyone in youth ministry knowing a few months beforehand. If WYD '15 keeps to that schedule, the location should start to leek out pretty soon. Within weeks, I would imagine. But alas not yet.

The smart money is on Krakow. In fact, I would put a lot of money on that, but then... I'm the guy who said that Pope Benedict would never visit the UK, and that the Pope after that wouldn't be South American, so you might want to spend your money on something else right now!

To be fair though, the smart money has been on Krakow for a few years now. A few other places have been banded around, but nothing has really seemed to gain traction. At least not the sort of traction that the ill-fated Johannesburg 2011 thing had. I say thing because I'm not sure whether it was a real bid or just a rumour, but either way nobody has ever seriously talked about anywhere other than Krakow in connection with World Youth Day 2015 at all.

So, I'm fairly sure Krakow will get the nod form the PCL. The 10th Anniversary of JP2's death combined with the 30th anniversary of the event itself seems to make Krakow work.

But then, we might be surprised. Krakow not getting the nod for 2015 is probably more likely than, say, a Jesuit South American being Pope, so 2013 might just have another surprise up its sleeve yet. Another European location might be chosen - or indeed another location altogether if they really want to throw a curve-ball!

Only time will tell.

What I can tell you with 99.9% certainty, though, is that it's not going to be London! And before you say 'but there was a huge campaign and everything,' I can tell you for certain that the notion was never even seriously entertained at CBCEW/ Eccleston Square. Sure, it may have been an item on a meeting agenda somewhere, but it never went any further than that. And besides, if it was coming to London in just over two years (or even just over three) we would know about it! CYMFed and CBCEW would be working hard already (yes, even before the announcement) and so would most of us. And we're not.

And don't even get me started on that 'campaign...' Short version: No members of the youth ministry community, nor anybody from CBCEW got anywhere near it!

In 2005, there was a meeting at Eccleston Square between a few key individuals which looked at the feasibility of hosting World Youth Day in London, but it didn't go any further than that. The plan was to have the final Mass at RAF Northolt, but a mere plan it remained. Nobody higher up than the bods in that meeting wanted to run with it. (More on the whole WYDUK thing here)

So, there you go all you googlers and questioners, there are a few answers. In brief: 2015? Dunno yet, but probably Krakow. London: Nope. Date for an update: Probably a few weeks.
