Poll

Well... what do you reckon? How often should there be an international gathering with the Pope for WYD?

Every year
Every two years (as it was prior to 2000)
Every three years (as it has been from 2002-2011)
Every four years
Every five years
Other answer (More than every five years, or not at all!)

POLL: How Frequent should WYD be??
« on: September 02, 2011, 10:53:21 PM »
According to the Tablet, Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Canberra and Goulburn has suggested that WYD should be held every five years. Apparently, he also 'expressed concern about the ability of the 2013 host country, Brazil, and dioceses around the world to prepare for the next WYD in Rio de Janeiro in just two years.'

I kind of share his concern, but the question of how often WYD should be is a complex one.

If it's less frequent there is more time to prep and raise money. On the other hand, if it's more frequent there are more WYDs and arguably the same amount of people will still get to attend somewhere, but just with less at each one. If that makes sense?

I would go for having it every two years. That would mean smaller events, but to be honest, that might not be so bad. Maybe groups could go to every other one and put more of an emphasis on regional gatherings. Maybe. I'm not sure. Also, I guess the disadvantage with that is that people may only go to the WYDs near to them, which would make them feel more like regional events than global.

But then, I was in the camp that thought Madrid 11 was a teeny bit too big.

Swings and roundabouts, I guess.

It would be interesting to hear people's views.

By the way, I should add that I'm not talking about the diocesan-level world youth days which happen each year on palm Sunday anyway. Just about the huge international gatherings. You all knew that, right?

I voted for every 3. I think 2 years doesn't seem like long enough to plan it, or for fundraising. 3 years is a nice gap :)

I haven't experience WYD 2 years apart. My first one was 2002, so i've had 3 years between each one.
I noticed between Sydney and Madrid, there seem to be alot of time for people to forget about WYD, and then suddenly it was on top of us again.  I think with 2 years, you can use the momentum gained from the previous WYD to publicise the next one. At least, that's what I am hoping. With less than 2 years to prepare for the next WYD, I might have a different opinion after Rio.
I see that they WYD after that one will probably be 2015, so are they going back to the 2 year format.

If you went with the plan of having them more often and just having the people that live the closest attend, Australians will probably never attend another WYD. I think its will be a while until we see it down here again.  There has been some talk about doing an Australian Youth Day, so its something we could do in the times between global WYDs.
personally i think 5 years would be too far apart.
