Good Speakers
« on: November 01, 2011, 10:12:04 AM »
Hi all,

Just wondering if you could please help me out. My Head has asked me to suggest some inspirational speakers for our Diocesan Heads' Conference in May. Apparently if I don't find him someone good...it's down to me...so any help you can offer me would be great as I am having a mental block! We don't want to use David Wells again (even though we love him) as we have literally just had a huge event with him up here with all staff in our schools and he also spoke to the Heads not so long ago.

Sr Judith Russi was another one but she is unable to do it.   :'( Dreading it falling to me! Ha ha

So...suggest away and I'd be really grateful!

Love ya's...oh, and Happy Feast of All Saints too!

Do you have a theme you want them to talk on?

I've not been given one. I think the hope was that we'd find a speaker and then give them a theme...or depending on who we find...tap into what we know they are good at. Ideally it will be something to do with Catholic Education. Any thoughts on speakers would be a good place to start. You'd think that given that I've been part of ACCE for some time now that I'd be able to reel a good few off but am having such a mental block!

Thanks though!

Here are the usual suspects:

Fr. Timothy Radcliffe
Fr. Christopher Jamison

And a few I know of:

Fr. Hugh Pollock - Chaplain to Lancaster University. Spoke at the retreat centres' conference for us in 2007, and was very good.
Fr. Stephen Ortiger - Abbot of Worth before Christopher. Good speaker.
Fr. Tony D'Souza - Jesuit who continues the work of Anthony de Mello

I'll post any more if I think of them...

Thanks Jack.

I did think of the 2 usual suspects, ha ha. I think that most of the Heads will have heard at least one of them recently too but I like the list of the others you have suggested. Also, because it is in May, the usual suspects may not be able to join us. They are on my list nonetheless.

I will do a bit of research and put together some kind of profile for him. Keep 'em coming! It really cannot fall to me, ha ha ha.

There are several (or many) members of this site who would be excellent. They might not be in the business of giving talks to headteachers but there is no reason why they shouldn't be. I'll start the list with:

Jack Regan and Anne-Marie Lavelle

but there are many more.

I find I am increasingly getting bored of the usual suspects; we need more people on the speakers circuit. There is such a wealth of wisdom and experience yet we always seem to fall back on the same familiar 'experts'.
Annie, this could be an opportunity to introduce a hitherto (relatively) unknown to that world  :)

Thanks indeed!

My Head did actually offer some suggestions as to what I could do when I eventually realised he was being deadly serious! What horrifies me is that I know most of the Heads...doing something infront of mine is hard enough BUT the rest of them...jeepers!

Juggler - you are right about the usual suspects and I think there is a great weatlh of gifted people out there too...it's just taking the initial risk at such a high profile do!

I was also thinking about Mgr John Armitage...he rocks, but figured he might be a bit busy with Olympic malarkey. Well, the Holy Spirit can sort this out.

I've just thought of another one...

There is a man called Kevin Quigley. He was head of Newman Sixth Form College in Preston and now does the speaking circuit. He did a heads' conference my Dad was at a few years back and was apparently pretty good.

There is also a De La Salle brother called Ben Foy who is pretty good too. I think he's still chaplain to St. Joseph's, Beulah Hill in London

Fr Christopher Jamison spoke to our School Day the other week. He was very good focussing on the Catholic nature of our schools. Made a good comparison with the International Baccalaureate which places thinking skills at the heart of the curriculum. He posed a question as to what a Catholic curriculum would look like if we placed Christ as the centre of all we do. Said that much of the Catholic ethos is limited to the corridors and breaks as we have to teach a curriculum that has beed placed upon us.

Daniel O Leary may be a good bet if you want to focus on his work on Begin with the heart and sacramental imagination.

Danny Curtin did a good day for me last week when he umpacked some of the CYMFED research into Catholic young people.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone. There is enough here to get me started...Come on Holy Spirit, let the RIGHT one make themselves known and available!

I am going to start with Fr Bede at Ampleforth though. There's also a fab Dominican in my diocese called Colin Carr. I'll start local and then branch further South!

Yeah, Danny's awesome. I'm currently wading my way through his confirmation resource 'truth' which is excellent.

Canon Luiz Ruscillo, Director of Education Service in Lancaster Diocese, is a talented speaker and a jolly nice chap!

Br Ben Foy retired from St Joseph's last year and I'm not sure where he's based anymore.

If you want something slightly different, Fr Paul Keane (Brentwood Diocese and associate member of Sion Community) is a brilliant speaker. He is a historian and I heard the most amazing talk from him recently on the history of the Mass.
