That's a lovely assembly Powerpoint. It is very timely for me too as my wekly theme for next week is vocation and the Newman prayer on the last slide is our school prayer and I hadn't thought about using it until now!

2
We have photographed some of the Y7 children acting out the stations of the cross and these are up on the plasma screens this week.
I've got 3 liturgies tomorrow and 2 on Thursday (differentiated for KS3&KS4). As part of the KS4 liturgy I've used part of the Manchester Passion and I'm having the whole thing playing in the chapel during lunchtimes this week.

This is great. I was just in the middle of writing a piece for our newsletter about Easter and the new Pope and I'g gone down the line of renewal and JPII new springtime, challenges during Benedicts time and the early characterisitcs of Francis' papacy. This image is a perfect match!

General Catholic Youth Ministry Resources / another conclave resource
« on: March 12, 2013, 12:16:21 PM »
A good friend of mine has managed to get himself a good jolly by going to Rome to feed back about the conclave via short youtube clips. He is Fr Andrew Stringfellow from the Salford diocese and he is accompanied by Fr Chris Gorton. Both are young and vibrant priests from our diocese so I am expecting good things from them over the next few days. The clips can be accessed from the following web address:

As above-just starting with Rainbows and the Spectrum material looks good. They are currently piloting a learning disability specific package too which may be of benefit for some or our more impaired SEN children.

Have messaged you now that I have been put on the IT system!

I did a week in Lourdes with the Diocese(managed to track you down to the Soli but didn't get chance to see you :'(). THen stayed in France for a further week in Rocamadour and the weather was fantastic. On returning home, the weather was good so several bbqs followed. The end of my summer was extended because our new school wasn't ready so got an extra week off!

Its been my first day in post today so can't comment from practical experience yet but my plan is to have a liturgy group that will be comprised of young people from y7-13. I will assist where necessary and initially give frameworks and templates to work from but hopefully it will evolve to a stage where the young people are skilled at designing liturgies and can run almost independently. This is only a plan ans whether it will work in reality I don't know but I'm going to run with it and see.

School Chaplains' Chat (Catholic Schools) / Re: Finally appointed!

Cool. I'm in Lourdes next week too. Arriving Friday 27th ;D

Excellent. We're there on 31st after spending a few days meandering down through France. We should overlap by a couple of days so I'll keep an eye out for you when we arrive! We're doing Tuesday to Tuesday this year? Apparently to do with organising the train.

Thank you both. I've messaged you Jack. I'm not back in school until September now so verification will have to wait until then.

Jack forgot one other proof of chaplaincy! :P

I was hoping not to have to show that tattoo to anyone ;)

In the meantime I'm off to Lourdes next week and will be looking for some inspiration. Our school houses have been named after pilgrimage destinations with Lourdes being one of them. The others are Santiago, Assisi, Nazareth and Walsingham. As the new chaplain I feel the need to suggest that we perhaps develop a rolling programme of visits and obviously I would need to go!

School Chaplains' Chat (Catholic Schools) / Finally appointed!

I've been volunteering in a chaplaincy role at my local RC college for some time now and after an arduous 2hr interview yesterday, I have finally been appointed to the Lay Chaplain post! As far as schools go, I think it is quite challenging for me to cut my chaplaincy teeth on as it has nrealy 2000 pupils, a sixth form, significant Muslim population and a relatively low practicing Catholic population plus it is the result of merging two schools together and they are fully integrated on a new site from September! Other than that, I'm feeling quite confident :-\

Jack, I'd like to access the private board now if I could? I think I may well need to sound people out on lots of things over the next 12 months!

School Chaplains' Chat (Catholic Schools) / Re: first retreat plan
« on: July 05, 2012, 10:01:19 PM »
Thanks for that. I thought that I was maybe trying to pack too much in. There are ice breakers linked in at the start of each session and they are very kinaesthetic too so hopefully should get rid of some energy that way!

I like the Dead Poets soc video so I'll pinch that one if I may?

However I redesign it, some sessions will need to run concurrently as there are 250 young people in y8 and the same number again in y9. I'm not going to mix the groups. The reason I put 8/9 was that I haven't decided which year to target first. This y8 have had a very mediocre retreat experience which was outsourced so I was unsure as to revisit that year with a better experience or go for next years y8 who are a blank slate.

I need to think about making the experience not like school as the plan is to host it in house. We have a brand new school building in September that has many extra  curricular spaces and our new chapel that can seat several hundred in it so will easily accommodate the year groups so hopefully we can be creative with the environment as well as the activities to make this happen.

Mass is an interesting topic for me at the moment as a high percentage of the students are Muslim and although we are a Catholic college, the number of practicing Catholics is relatively low. I'm keen that Mass should be integral to our work but haven't got my head round how to make it meaningful for the majority of students yet. That's a post for a later date I think.....

I'll shrink the programme and reduce my expecations. Once I've formulated, I'll repost. Thanks again.

School Chaplains' Chat (Catholic Schools) / first retreat plan
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:13:32 PM »
I'm putting together my  first retreat/reflection day plan and am hoping for some feedback from more experienced chaplains. It's for y8/9 and the children have had little in the way of spiritual direction to date. I'm attempting quite heavy stuff I think but using very practical workshop sessions which I'll outline below:

Aim: to develop sense of self and start to discern personal mission

Objectives:    1) To experience practical ways to pray, meditate and question ones identity.
               2) To formulate a draft personal mission statement

Sessions:

1)   Introduction and opening prayer.
Outline of workshops and use of” spiritual levels” framework to explain process and outcomes

2)   Vision
Use of timeline to explore past experiences and develop vision for the future. Develop skeleton goal plans to realise vision

3)   Beliefs
Exploring beliefs that support or hinder realisation of vision. Use “Museum of old beliefs” technique to replace unhelpful beliefs with more functional ones.

4)   Prayer(talking to God)
Discussion about rationale for prayer and various examples of prayer.
Introduction to PRAY acronym and development of personal prayer.
Introduction to “Praying in colour and development of non-verbal art prayer.

5)   Meditation(listening to God)
Discussion of rationale for meditation and various examples/
Guided meditation “Golden Core”
Guided meditation based on scripture
MP3/CD  for future use containing guided meditation

6)   Develop personal mission statement
Use information gathered from earlier workshops to inform formulation of personal mission statement. Formula outline to assist in construction. Link with Newman link in chain prayer.

7)   Plenary and closing prayer
Linking personal mission with school mission and move from self to serving others.

Does this look OK or am I being too ambitious? There will be a team of experienced RE staff facilitating.

Thanks for the replies! I'm happy with safeguarding and confidentiality issues due to previous roles in social work and therapy but I'm not experienced with planning liturgy so I'll focus some attention on that. Ofsted and s48 reports have been of limited value as the school is a merger of the two local catholic schools and hasn't had any inspections in its own right. The two previous schools were very different in culture and catchment too but it has been useful to investigate the heritage of the new school to see how this may influence the future vision. Unfortunately I have said first aid qualification and I can already see the demand for an off timetable member of staff!
When I went to see the head, he asked about how it would be for me and my children if I were sucessful and I've already had the discussion with my children about it and everyone is happy with it. I already do some stuff at the primary school and church so they are well used to seeing me leading projects in which their peers participate and they've not complained too much yet!
I've only been interviewed by a panel of children once but I felt it was the most genuine interview process that I participated in and so I'm looking forward to that it it is part of the process, although with a little trepidation given the range of questions they may ask!
As for support and supervision, I'm hopeping that there are internal arrangements for this by the school but I've also got personal supprt that I can use too such as formal spiritual direction and more informal support from chaplain and priest friends. This is the area that I am most concerned about though as this will be a big change in direction for my career and I want to make sure that I'm heading in the right direction, especially in the early days.
Anyway, I'm off to ponder chocolate bars and cartoon characters...........

Hi all. I've just completed my application for a chaplaincy post at my local secondary school. I've done some groundwork with regard to this e.g. met the episcopal vicar for education to discuss chaplaincy from a diocisan perspective and discussed more operational stuff with several chaplain friends. I'm a strong candidate with regard to pastoral care but I have no formal theology qualification. I'm planning on doing an MA in chaplaincy studies to address some of the knowledge gaps and I've had an informal meeting with the school head to discuss the school vision and the benefits of further study. My parish priest is one of the referees for the application and is also chair of governors so hopefully this will be useful! My children will be attending this school too and my eldest is due to start y7 in September so I've got a vested interest in the school regardless of my sucess. So my question to you chaplains already in post is what can I do to fully prepare for the interview? What questions did you get ast interview that you weren't expecting?
In eager anticipation
Chris

General Catholic Youth Ministry Resources / Re: New BBC series 'Catholics'
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:44:02 AM »

The ex-roadie's understanding of relationships was just cringeworthy and I am slightly worried about how his vocation will pan out - I don't think somebody should become a priest without a decent understanding of relationships.

Thats quite interesting as I warmed to him and felt he was the guy who would relate better to the young people I work with. I thin kit is difficult to assess his take on relationships from a 30 second clip and I thought that he noted that he had been in abusive relationships but made no further inference from that.

I guess this is why priests come from a wide range of backgrounds and people gravitate towards others with whom they feel comfortable :)

Pilgrimages and other trips... / Re: Lourdes baths to be moved
« on: February 23, 2012, 01:47:20 PM »
This makes sense as the baths have always been tight for space and also a very strange expereince for the uninitiated! I'm glad there will be a new format too rather than the full immersion in the icy waters :o I hope there is still some good space retained on the prairie as it is a great location to relax and take in the grotto and wider sanctuary. I wonder if there will be a new bridge constructed to handle the increase in traffic?

CYMFed Flame Congress 2012 / SAFE Ambition musicians performing at FLAME!
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:18:02 PM »
Our talented musucians from the Ambition project are performing at Flame! It will be a great opportunity for them to showcase their work in a supportive Catholic environment and gain skills in performing to large audiences. Undecided if I'm personally attending yet as have family committments over that weekend but I hope the opportunity arises. It would be great to meet people in person but if not, you'll get to see the talent we have here up in Manchester!

I've had the following site bookmarked for some time now ans there is also a short section on spiritual engagement:
http://www.pursuit-of-happiness.org/science-of-happiness/?gclid=CK2_hPnmyawCFbQntAodJWjzqg
Working within the mental health field, it's been interesting watching the slow shift from "hard" therapies e.g. CBT to softer approaches that recognise the benefits of more intangible feelings such as happiness. There is a good book by Connirae and Tamara Andreas called core transformations which demonsrates a therapeutic process to acheive a peaceful/happ core state
http://coretransformation.org/
I've used this approach therapeutically had had great results. It's only over that last couple of years though that I've examined my practice specifically through the lens of being catholic and many therapeutic approaches would benefit from additional spiritual strengthening.

Not aware of anything chaep in UK but the States have really cheap stuff e.g.
http://www.madonnashopsonline.com/category.sc;jsessionid=92CFA7B5A0C9A525AFAFA164C4E114CF.qscstrfrnt06?categoryId=178.

Maybe worth asking if someone could order and post on or if anyone is due a visit??

Hi sfobe

I went to complete your survey but I couldn't fill it in as it is currently designed. I don't conceptualise the topic you refer to in a hierachy and so cannot rate on that basis. Is there another way of requesting the information you desire or an alternative format of survey? All the best with your project.

Thought I'd just post an update. Well after attending the conference in Liverpool, I came away enthused and quickly began to put in place arrangements for a Y5-Y8 group. I've done some "market research" at the primary school with the children as to what they would want out of the group and I am planning the same with the secondary school. The kids have come up with lots of ideas and I asked whether the group would be better on a weekday evening or at weekend and several of the children ststed they would like to attend both! Some of the activities they wanted to do will require some resources so I need to go and tap up the pp. I've been struck by both the childrens desire to attend the group and also the number of potential volunteers. Exciting times......

I attended the youth ministry conference for Liverpool diocese yesterday (as an interloper as I'm in Salford!) and I was very impressed with enthusiasm ans commitment from both young people and youth ministry. This was the second day with the first being 6 monthds ago and there has been much progress in some areas with regard to establishing or enriching activities.

I came away enthused and hope that similar can be acheived in my own diocese and I'm going to approach our diocesan youth worker and bishop to suggest such a day for ourselves. Congratulations Liverpool! ;D

Catholic Youth Ministry News, Youth Culture & General Chat / Re: Lent
« on: January 15, 2012, 04:00:10 PM »
From a personal perspective, I'm going to start praying the Divine Office, well at least morning and evening prayer anyway ;) I've not done this on my own before and have bought The Devine Office for Dodos to assist and at first glance it looks very useful. From a work perspective, I'm going to use lent as a timeframe to invigorate and operationalise a new youth ministry at my parish.

25
Thanks juggler. I've checked on the Liverpool website and the day looks like it will be very useful. I'll enquire tomorrow to check if they would accomodate an interloper. :)
