Danville!

Can any Americans tell me if this is the Danville in the song by the The Band?

Yep, me - but then it's only in Bromwich!

Want to hook up there? It would be good to say hello!

Musician's Corner / The Brilliance
« on: April 09, 2013, 05:55:14 PM »
Ok. I'm not usually quick on the uptake with these sorts of things, but I've discovered The Brilliance.

Just this afternoon an Anglican-vicar-friend of mine told me about this band. Apparently they are evangelical Christians from Canada with a Catholic friendly approach to their music (so he told me).

I've only listened to the two videos below so, if you know as little about them as I do, would you like to join me in finding out some more about these guys? - and if you like we can report back later on what we think. (PS Now And At The Hour has an interesting start!)

Musician's Corner / Re: The importance of music ministry...
« on: April 08, 2013, 08:48:54 PM »
People are aware that I'm of a traditional bent when it comes to this subject - partly because I think many Catholics know frighteningly little about the depth and breadth of sacred music (particularly chant), and I think we should get to know it as well as we can - but also because it's beautiful and (mostly) it's easy to learn. I can say that because we (the young people and I) managed to learn and sing an English plainsong version of Compline during the period of Advent a couple of years ago.

During this Lent I've been able to sing the Simple English Propers (Int. Off. Comm. & free to download!) at a 'low' mass in my parish - it didn't prolong it and people heard part of the mass they had been missing out on for some time, so music can also introduce parishioners to a fuller experience of the liturgy.

In short, the way I look at music is that (in the Catholic tradition) it should do the same thing that sacred art, architecture and liturgy does: ie catechise, attract and demand a response. I don't see it as an add-on but as part of the way we get to learn about our faith.

I cried! :'(

Very moving.

I must admit I cried - and that was only after watching the highlights afterwards!

Very moving day, especially as I was starting youth club as the announcement came in - I think the kids thought I was a bit strange.

Oh, and the media seems really surprised that he's a Catholic. One station asked the question: "The new pope: what does he believe?"

From now on, I'm just gonna point people in the direction of Penn, from Penn and Teller... The Atheist gets it! Why doesn't everyone else!

May the Spirit inspire the Cardinals as they meet today.

Someday I'm going to make a list of 'people who I really wish weren't Catholic. Piers Morgan will be near the top. The top spot, itself, of course, is Jimmy Savile.

Wheat and tares, Jack, wheat and tares! ;D

10
The best bit is Piers saying something like,
Quote

...I, along with many young Catholics...

Oh, Piers, please, my sides!

11
Y'know when you see something and can't quite believe it? Well that's the case with this video - linked from New Advent. Only 3mins and worth seeing to the end.

Sorry to give you more work, but when you think about them there are so many! Perhaps you could farm some of these out to knowledgable members? Or allow people to post good resources they've seen or read?

This is a fabulous video - well worth the late night last night!

I often think that you simply need an historian to debunk the rubbish you hear about faith vs sicience. It's false from a philosophical point of view and it's false from an historical/factual point of view.

The most shocking thing in the video is the story of the BBC documentary on the Big Bang that failed to mention Fr Lemiatre (the founder of the theory) - like talking about the Theory of Relativity without mentioning Einstien!!! Well put!

By the way, I must really recommend the book Fr Andrew Pinsent notes in his talk, How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilisation http://www.amazon.co.uk/Catholic-Church-Built-Western-Civilization/dp/1596983280/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1362477465&sr=1-1

Thank you Papa, indeed! Definitely a pope of surprises - I will miss him.

These are great! - was this your idea Jack?

Seriously though, I'd have loved to have been a fly on the wall when you made that phone call!

Did anyone ever apologise or do something you didn't expect?

Although not here - elsewhere. I've said too much already!

Has anyone caught the BBC's Fr Brown yet?

What do people think of it? Has anyone read the books? Will it get people talking about Catholicism?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts/reviews!

No Hobbit?!

To be fair, it is the ONLY film I saw in 2012.

General Catholic Youth Ministry Resources / Re: New BBC series 'Catholics'
« on: February 09, 2012, 07:47:51 PM »
Good point... as I keep saying, I think the role and profile of the laity needs a shot in the arm (but not in an anti-clerical way, of course).  :)

Just so!

One of those shots in the arm for Catholic men would be to be honoured in the family and as part of a married couple. Marriage (and, soon, probably heterosexual marriage) is now just one of a number of 'choices'. That both men and women chose to be married in the Church is fast becoming novel, and I think the Church needs to remind the laity of probably their most sacred duty as the Royal Priesthood - to practice and defend a holy married and family life. All vocations are nurtured there, whether clerical or lay.

I don't know if anyone has seen the series of video responses to the following video, "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus: Spoken Word"..?

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word

Now the video medium is indeed a powerful tool for communicating the Gospel, but I thought these were particularly creative! Just to say that there is lots to like about the original video - with 11million hits it seems to be scratching where people are itching. And with the Pope's Year of Faith starting in October perhaps these point to one way forward.

What do people think?
