Musician's Corner / The Brilliance
« on: April 09, 2013, 05:55:14 PM »
Ok. I'm not usually quick on the uptake with these sorts of things, but I've discovered The Brilliance.

Just this afternoon an Anglican-vicar-friend of mine told me about this band. Apparently they are evangelical Christians from Canada with a Catholic friendly approach to their music (so he told me).

I've only listened to the two videos below so, if you know as little about them as I do, would you like to join me in finding out some more about these guys? - and if you like we can report back later on what we think. (PS Now And At The Hour has an interesting start!)

Has anyone caught the BBC's Fr Brown yet?

What do people think of it? Has anyone read the books? Will it get people talking about Catholicism?

Would be interested to hear your thoughts/reviews!

Greetings all.

Has anyone seen this? - it was over at the linked site below. I thought it was quite good!

I don't know if anyone has seen the series of video responses to the following video, "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus: Spoken Word"..?

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word

Now the video medium is indeed a powerful tool for communicating the Gospel, but I thought these were particularly creative! Just to say that there is lots to like about the original video - with 11million hits it seems to be scratching where people are itching. And with the Pope's Year of Faith starting in October perhaps these point to one way forward.

What do people think?

Advent & Christmas Resources / Coptic Christmas
« on: January 11, 2012, 07:46:13 PM »
Premier Radio carries this fantastic report from the UK Coptic Orthodox Church and their Nativity liturgies and celebrations. There's an interview with what sounds like a young person from the parish and the reporter ends the piece with this rather startling and encouraging statement:

Quote
"I'm sure you'd agree, the Coptic Orthodox Church is very much alive, vibrant and relevant to the Christian community".

Wow! There's three words you don't often hear associated with church nowadays! Click below...

« on: January 03, 2012, 08:19:29 PM »
Following Dr Law's debate with WLC in October there's been no end of discussion about his "Evil God Challenge".

For those who want to crib-up on this then there's a full PDF at the following: http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayFulltext?type=1&fid=7247672&jid=RES&volumeId=-1&issueId=-1&aid=7247664&fromPage=cupadmin&pdftype=6316268

Was saddened to hear this news this morning. Of all of the "Four Horsemen" he was the one I was fondest of.

Is it music? Is it ministry? Phil Loose and Peter Martin (Elevation Records) come in to chat with Nick Battle about the Christian music scene.

It does get quite interesting later on. What do people think? Does this touch on the Catholic music scene?

I'm resurrecting this topic because it's just become a live issue for me at work.

I am going away with a school on an activities holiday (not a Catholic school), and on the medical form it says:

Quote
Any special dietary requirements? eg religious or medical...etc

Well, I guess I'll have to put "Fish on Friday, please" or maybe "No meat, thank you." It feels strange!
Has anyone else had to put this on a form yet? Or indeed, how are your schools dealing with it? My cousin, who is a chaplain, said that the school canteen is considering stopping bacon butties on Fridays.

Are there other experiences of this?

Events for Youth Ministers / Dr William Lane Craig UK Tour
« on: August 30, 2011, 02:04:19 PM »
Quote
In October 2011, William Lane Craig, arguably the world's leading Christian academic apologist, will once again visit the UK for a series of lectures and debates. Following his highly successful Reasonable Faith Tour in 2007, Bill will again present the case for the truth of the Christian faith, responding both to Stephen Hawking's recent book The Grand Design as well as to Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion, which will then have just seen its 5 year publication anniversary.

Richard Dawkins has thus far declined a debate, but the door is open to him defending his book The God Delusion on 25th October 2011 at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford.

Source: http://www.premier.org.uk/craig

This is pretty mouthwatering!

So far Polly Toynbee has pulled out of a debate after agreeing to take part in it, and A C Grayling has declined to debate Dr Craig. Richard Dawkins has turned down numerous requests for a debate - which has earned him some criticism from his fellow atheists - so Dr Craig will leave an "open chair" at his Oxford debate (see link above) for Dawkins to fill if he wants it. Otherwise, Dr Craig will simply deliver a lecture on the deficiencies of Dawkins' book The God Delusion.

Here's a video in anticpation of this event (or not!):  :)

Saw this on New Liturgical Movement about some of our Eastern brethren:

Maronite Monks of Adoration

Thought this might be helpful for those considering a vocation to the religious life, or perhaps as a demonstration about the variety of Christian worship. They pray in Aramaic too - Christ's language - amazing!

From New Liturgical Movement. Click below to take a look:
CTS People's Missal Early Proof Preview

Quote
The following is an early page proof for the edition being worked on by CTS which will include dual Latin-English for some of the text.

Please note: This is an early proof, not a final proof.

NLM is told "the Missal will have short introductions to the Masses of the ‘tempi forti’ taken from Pope Benedict’s Magisterium and will also have devotional material for preparation and thanksgiving before and after Mass."

It will be interesting to see the final product both in form and in content. You can expect an NLM review at that time. But for now, a quick preview of the early concept.

News you have probably heard recently...

Quote
The Blessed John Henry Newman Institute for Liturgical Music is a new venture by the Fathers of the Birmingham Oratory in association with the Maryvale Institute under the joint patronage of Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham and James MacMillan, the celebrated Catholic Composer.

The purpose of the Institute is to provide a general formation in liturgical music, so that the Sunday liturgy in parishes may benefit from a doctrinal, liturgical and musical formation. The Institute is to be launched on Saturday, September 17th at the Oratory, Birmingham, to mark the first anniversary of the beatification of Blessed John Henry Newman, and to inaugurate a term of study mornings and evenings particularly designed to promote the music associated with the new translation of the Mass which will come into effect at Advent.
