Free Catholic smartphone apps
« on: November 22, 2012, 10:11:30 AM »
A site called FreeForCatholics.com, which tells you all about - wait for it - free stuff for Catholics, has a list of Catholic smartphone apps that are free of charge.

There is a list for the iPhone and one for Android phones.

If you don't mind paying a few quid for your apps, I can heartily recommend Universalis. It gives you the full divine office and the full lectionary, as well as information about the day and adjustable calendars for different countries and, in some cases, dioceses. It costs 10 which is pretty pricey, but put it this way... I got it when it was 20 and I still think it's worth it. As a Chaplain it's a vital tool. It also gives you the full order of Mass, and it works well on the iPad too.

There is s stripped down version of this app though called 'Catholic Calendar' which is free, if you really can't stretch to a tenner!

Has anyone ever used an app like this actually in Mass?

Nope. I'm convinced most of the people in my parish would think I was texting... I do use my Kindle in Mass though, as I have the daily readings and the Order of Mass on there.

The Vatican says priests can use them on the altar, so why not? ;D

I know a few worship leaders who use them for their lyrics and music.

Laudate is a GREAT app for android which is free for download too. It has EVERYTHING on it. Even the examination of conscience is like a ticky box thing and when you click "make your confession" it has it there for you, word for word, beginning with Bless me Father...etc... and then it lists all the things you have ticked and eliminated the ones you didn't. For people who struggle with confession, this is perfect. For those people who say that they never know what to say, there is no excuse now. A few of my older kids have downloaded it. There is even a prayer to say before you can proceed to the examen itself!

If you've not downloaded it...you need to...now!

Yes I have seen musicians using them.

Might give it a go then with the iPad and see what the reaction is!!

I wonder how we get (more) young people using the Apps and engaging/participating more in what they perceive as to be a boring celebration!
