The site has been pretty quiet the last few days. Don't worry, we'll get back to normal service this week.

In the mean time, here's something to think about.

Fairly soon, Lent will be upon us and so it's worth thinking ahead.

What have you got planned? For your own journey through Lent? In your work?

Any great resources? Any ideas? Any worries?

I spent a good chunk of last week looking at Lent.

I've written most of our Lentern Liturgy, and of our Reconciliation Services, though am still drawing a blank with what to do on Ash Wednesday (other than distribute ashes!)

I'm looking for suggestions of a nice piece of music that focuses on the crucifixion of Jesus that I can give to one of our dance classes to create a liturgical dance to for our end of term liturgy. They're also going to be asked to involve bringing the crown of thorns into our prayer display as part of the dance. Anyone got any suggestions of a good piece of music?

Also possibly thinking of using this- we used the Facebook nativity video they made for our Advent Service, and it went down very well- I think this is a nice follow up! :) Just got to figure out whether it is OK to have that ending during Lent, but was thinking of having it just before we finish, then praying for hope in the resurrection...

As usual we will be starting Lent with the Service of Resistance and Repentance at the Ministry of Defence on Ash Wednesday. It will be the thirtieth year of this service. A report from Ash Wednesday 2011 is on Independant Catholic News

A similar service is also taking place in Liverpool.

I will endeavour to post a link to the liturgy for the day when it is available

We had a great meeting yesterday with our Spiritual Life Group, who had been asked to come up with ideas of marking Lent in school.

We're now producing a Lentern Calendar, which each student with get (like the ones Walk With Me produce, but aimed at teenagers) which we will link to our daily prayer and have on a big display board in school. (If anyone is interested in having a copy when we've finalised it, let me know!)

We're going to create some kind of Lentern display with candles, counting down the weeks of Lent, similar to an Advent Wreath (but probably not round!)

We're going to produce prayer booklets for our stations of the cross, and have student-led stations some lunchtimes during Lent... and maybe a weekly Bible study (which might be interesting, because I'm sure the student who suggested that has some format she's used to in her head and I tend to err more towards Lectio Divina because it's awesome, so it probably won't be what she's thinking of!)

They had a few more good ideas, but slightly less managable, so I'll have to think about them a bit harder before I commit us to them!

From a personal perspective, I'm going to start praying the Divine Office, well at least morning and evening prayer anyway ;) I've not done this on my own before and have bought The Devine Office for Dodos to assist and at first glance it looks very useful. From a work perspective, I'm going to use lent as a timeframe to invigorate and operationalise a new youth ministry at my parish.

Last year I used Lent for Everyone: Matthew by Tom Wright. This year I am reading my way through the book focusing on Mark's Gospel. I think it's a great read, really worthwhile.
