Fasting is back... what's your plan??
« on: August 28, 2011, 07:55:11 PM »
(image hotlinked from flickr user ndrwfgg)

From Friday September 16th (that's just over two weeks away) Catholics in England & Wales are once again being asked to fast from meat on a Friday. (full CBCEW statement from earlier in the year).

Okay, so this isn't everyone's favourite idea. Inevitably some will buy in and others won't. But that's for another thread (yeah, probably another forum really!). But I thought it would be interesting to share our approaches on how we intend to put this across with our young people.

So... what have you come up with? Any resources? Any tricks? Any sessions? Any resistance?

Come on... spill...

My understanding is that the Friday penance was to deny ourselves the luxuries in the same way we do during lent.  Meat was a luxury food that only the wealthy could afford.  This is no longer the case.  The Bishop's state, "or some other form of food". I am considering giving up Fish on Fridays.

My plan of gentle encouragement has been foiled by that pesky diocese!  Just had an email through asking all schools "as Catholic Communities seek to observe such a penance by only providing non-meat meals on Fridays in our dining rooms and encouraging parents to do the same with the packed lunches for their children on that day.  The latter, of course, is absolutely at the discretion of the parents, but the former is clearly within our jurisdiction. This may take some time to put into place but I am sure that providers of school meals will be sensitive to our religious needs in this matter."

That spoils that idea then!

Well, the Bishops are asking veggies to find another suitable penance to do instead.

Actually eating meat is creative to say the least!!!

We are going meat-free from this Friday. I am speaking about the change in assemblies this week and I have been asked to make posters for the canteen helping the students to understand why we are doing this. Anyone come across any good resources for explaining this to young people. My first assembly today got a huge groan when I mentioned it.

I mentioned it in assembly this morning with the lower school and will again tomorrow with the older students. I stressed the penance aspect as well as it giving us a great chance to reflect on how authentic we are - our theme for this week!!

Yeah - that backfired. Saturday's stomach pains (a usual occurrence in my life at present) resulted in me collapsing in pain at the top of the stairs of my house (I didn't fall down thank God!).
I don't think I'll eat bacon again on Friday.

Perfect story for assembly, thanks Henry. I'll say a friend of mine ate meat last friday in deliberate defiance of the new law and the next day he was struck down with terrible stomach pains, that'swhat will happen to you if you eat meat on fridays!

I'm sure that will work.

That sounds like a good old fashioned Catholic penance to me. Just think how many years in purgatory you've saved by doing that ;)

As a veggie, you might also want to try wearing a cilice every Friday!!

N.B. For those new to the site... I'm not serious. It aint that kind of site :)

Hahaha - If God is supposed to be good, why did he give your friend a Cronic auto immune disease?
